Updating tags without wiping the ones you have 🏷️

🚨 Anything you map on the Match Properties screen replaces what's already there. 🚨

This is very important to keep in mind if you have existing tags already applied to your subscribers and you want to make updates.

If you map the Tags property to a column in your file, that column's value becomes that subscriber's entire tag set — everything else they already had is gone.(This applies to every property, not just Tags.)

If a property wasn't previously blank and your new property field is blank, this will also be overridden.

So how do I update my tags safely?

There are two safe ways to add a tag ✅
Option 1 — Map Tags to a complete column

Export your subscriber list from Subtext (or pull it from your CRM) so your Tags column already holds each person's full existing tag list, then add the new tag to each row, comma-separated:

For example

I want to add "loyal" to indicate our most loyal subscriber cohort to an existing list. See below:

  • earlybird, March 2025 cohort, weekendupdates, sale, premium, loyal

Map Tags to that column and everyone keeps what they had, plus the new tag. 👏

Option 2 — Skip the Tags column and use the toggle.

Split your audience into one file per tag and upload each file separately with the corresponding tag or property via the Import Audience action.

For example

We have a basic list and a premium list we want to tag. See below:

  • One file is uploaded and the whole audience is tagged with "Premuim"

  • Second filed is uploaded and the whole audience is tagged with "Basic"

This pathway is additive, so nothing existing is touched.

**Bonus Pathway ✨

Using both options at once? You can map a Tags column AND turn on the toggle.

Your column's tags are written first, then the toggle's tags are added on top — so you'll always end up with both sets.

You will then be directed to the Review Details screen.

Email Confirmation 📩

When the process is complete, Subtext will send an email to the account's registered email address with a full summary of results.Screenshot 2026-08-28 at 5.38.01 PM

The email will show:

  • Total number of subscribers successfully updated.
  • Number of records that are not recognized on this campaign.
  • Number of records that have previously opted out of the campaign.

A View Subscribers button in the email links directly to the Subscribers section of your campaign for immediate review.
